Employee Spotlight: Scott McKelvie

Do you have a favorite charity you wish more people knew about? I really am an animal advocate and like to support organizations that support the care, rehabilitation, and relocation services of animals. SPCA does great work for communities across the country. Most animals are not self-sufficient and do not have their own voice. Someone needs to help them out.

If you could snap your fingers and become an expert at something, what would it be? I can’t think of anything specific. In all honesty, I really like being a jack of all trades and a master of none!

What’s your favorite hobby? I really like to fly kites and build them myself. I actually travel all across the country and attend competitions for it. Some of the events are close by in Berkeley and Gold Gate Park, while others are held in places like Seattle, Washington and Phoenix, Arizona. There are individual and team performances… think of it as the Blue Angels of kite flying. Take a look on YouTube and see what you’re missing out on!

Do you own any pets? Yes, I have a black cat with white paws named Shadow. We rescued her from an abandoned house in our apartment complex. We named her Shadow because she constantly was on our heels everywhere we went when we first found her. She still acts that way to this day.

Do you have a favorite quote? Go big or go home! It’s a common phrase used by kite flyers in my competition. It also relates to my general interest of approaching life. I’m a bit on the extreme side and like to play hard.

Aside from picking up delivery routes, what are you doing to pass the time during the shelter-in-place order? My wife has really grown to enjoy the shelter-in-place order because I’ve been spending the majority of my free time knocking off things on my ‘Honey To-Do List’. Some are simple hosuehold chores while others have been projects on the backburner for a few years. It’s strange because I’ve been checking things off of that list for months now, but it continues to grow!

How do you like your coffee? I’m not much of a coffee guy, I start my mornings with a Monster energy drink.

What is your favorite television show? I really enjoy any of the cable television shows that restore or talk up about hot rods. The Martin Brother’s Iron Restoration show is one that comes to mind. I’m also a sports guy and really like to watch baseball so you’ll always catch me tuned into a game.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? When I was a little kid, my dad was a milkman so naturally, I wanted to be just like him when I grew up.

What is your biggest fear? Deep water! I’ve just never been a fan of it. Maybe it was all the scary shows and movies I saw when I was younger. It might be because I like being in control and swimming in deep water can lack that when your feet can touch the ground. It just gives me an uncomfortable feeling… but I can swim.

What is the best concert you’ve ever been to? Garth Brooks backstage a couple years ago down in San Jose. I actually knew his ex-wife Sandy from a family connection, so whenever he came into town they always took care of us. My wife and I even have some Garth Brook World Tour jackets with our names on them.

If you were an office supply, which one would you be and why? I would be a 3 ring binder because I think I can keep it together pretty good.
