Employee Spotlight: Daniel Nieves

Do you have a favorite charity you wish more people knew about? Breast Cancer Action and Breast Cancer Prevention Partners in San Francisco. I actually had an aunt I was very close with who passed away from breast cancer within the past year. I admire organizations working hard to find more successful cures for it.

What’s your favorite hobby? I enjoy playing with my kids. They’re all right at that age where they keep me on my feet! I have an older daughter who is 8, my middle child who is 7 and my youngest boy who is 3.

What is one thing about you that many people do not know? I’m a fast runner. When I was in high school, I use to run track and participate in the 100M sprint and cross country events.

Do you like to travel? What is your favorite vacation thus far and why? I don’t do it as often as I would like, but yes I like to travel. When I was about 12 years old, I went to Mexico City with my family and toured a bunch of museums. One of my favorite stops was seeing the original Aztec Mexican calendar. I look forward to sharing these types of trips with my family as well some day.

Who is your favorite customer and why? My favorite customer is the San Francisco Police Department. They are really nice to me and strike up conversations when I stop by. It also helps when it comes to parking, a little less stress when you have the police on your side!

What was your first job? When I was 9 years old, I started my own business mowing lawns around the neighborhood. It was a nice summer job to make some money and buy some things I wanted for myself.

If you could snap your fingers and become an expert at something, what would it be? There are a couple of things. It may not be an expert, but if I could change anything, I’d like to be taller. Let me snap my fingers and grow an extra foot or two please!

Any special traditions you keep up with around Halloween? It’s one of my son’s birthday the day before Halloween so we usually put together a small celebration, throw on some Michael Meyers movies. My kids really like that scary stuff. On Halloween, we keep it traditional, dress up and go trick-or-treating. I usually like to end the night “checking” my kids candy bags and finding a couple Reese’s peanut butter cups that I need to test out to make sure they aren’t poisoned or anything.

If you were an office supply, which one would you be and why? A filing cabinet because it stores important information while keeping things organized and separated.

What is your biggest fear and why? It would definitely be the idea of being buried alive. Have you ever seen the movie with Ryan Reynolds in it when he’s stuck with a cell phone and a lighter and he is put up for ransom? Claustrophobia kicks in and it just feels freaky.
